The Performance Layer

After the successful release of When the Moon Sings, independent filmmaker Jesu Medina has brought his short to film and animation festivals around the world including Paris International Animation Festival, OIAF, Girona Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival, Sommets du cinéma d’animation, and Fest Anča.

Over more than a year of close collaboration, JALI has supported Medina’s evolving creative process and experimental approach to storytelling, helping bring his vision to screen through performance-driven animation workflows. 

Working under a condensed timeline, Medina used JALI as the performance backbone for this project across the full spectrum of production: from pre-production – character development, script visualization, narrative exploration, and previs, blocking, through production – animation, VFX, motion design, and iterative revisions all the way to post-production – editing, polish and final renders.  

In this behind-the-scenes demo session, Medina will break down how using JALI’s performance-driven workflows helped accelerate his creative iteration while maintaining expressive character acting throughout production. Attendees will get an inside look at some new experimental work demonstrating  JALI’s 3D animation in 2D hybrid workflows, along with practical insights into building agile animation workflows for independent and studio productions alike.
